I’m not sure it has a future, with only two brands.
Maybe this will open the door for the SuperGT brands, or maybe for a surprise entry form Alfa Romeo, Cadillac, Volvo or even Ford.

Out of all the possibilities, I can see four brands being the most likely to make the jump: Alfa Romeo, Toyota, Opel, and Ford.
Toyota has a history in touring cars, including a past in the original DTM with the Supra in 1990. The Avensis and GT86 would be the most likely models used.
Alfa Romeo has a bright history in the original DTM, topped by their championship in 1993 with the 155 V6 Ti. The Giulia could be the car of choice, or the 4C, should organizers continue to mandate coupe bodystyles.
Opel also has an original DTM championship, the final one in 1996 with the Calibra. If sedans were allowed, the Insignia GSi would be the car of choice, if not, perhaps the Astra GTC, after it’s unveiled, should only coupes and 3-doors be allowed.
Then, there’s Ford. They could easily make the Mustang their DTM car, It was done in 1990.
